A HAPPIER YOU IS BREWING - SHARING OUR CAREER STORIES WITH YOU

Carlos Santos, usually called by English pronunciation, but not many people know that in Portuguese his name is pronounced . He was recently promoted to Manager Material Planning WE but he has started the journey with our company as an ISC Management Trainee.

“I come from a small town in the north of Portugal, a famous wine region, unfortunately not beer. I did my bachelor studies in mechanical engineering and during this time started to arouse the curiosity for Supply Chain. Under such influence, later on I did my masters in production management in Porto. New city brings new experience, and I like the feeling of challenging myself to work out my comfort zone. That led me to the furthest I could reach (geographically) –China. Still today I appreciate the learnings from this diverse experience. It’s been 3 years since I joined the company as a supply chain management trainee and now I am part of the Material Supply Management team.”

What was your journey of becoming an ISC employee/ how did you get to CH?
“The study period in China didn’t consume all my passion of exploring other cultures. When back to Portugal, I started looking for opportunities abroad. A spontaneous visit to a friend’s place in Switzerland left me some very good memories. Since then Switzerland got my attention with its nature and opportunities in supply chain industry. A few months later, after rounds of interviews, I’m here. Still remember I moved here on the same day I presented my masters thesis, second day woke up thinking I was still in Portugal.”

What you’re passionate about?
“Stay curious and always learning something new, it keeps me motivated—same for professional and non-professional areas. One year in the S&OP team opened me the door to planning, with the learning and implementation of best practices. The past year on MSM has been giving more exposure to operational side of the business. Hobby wise, I had lots of fun learning skiing and bouldering from zero (falling nonstop). When not doing sports, I enjoy spending time experimenting new photography techniques in pursue of the best landscape shot. “

What do you miss the most now when you work from home?
“The people, definitely. Technologies still allow you stay connected, but it’s still hard to compete with face to face interaction, particularly for a people person like me.”

Please give an example of when you've gone above and beyond?
“I wouldn’t say I went above and beyond on this one,but leaving the comfort zone back in Portugal to go study in a completely different culture, made me undoubtedly more open minded and more ready for uncertainties and challenges.”

Your favorite beer?
“It used be Super Bock but I have to say that my roots surrendered to the Grimbergen Blond.”

Who in the world would you like to go and have a beer with?
“Dead or alive? Dead, it’s Freddie Mercury – for the thrilling life journey he went through! Alive, there are many, but I would say, Elon Musk – for the brilliant entrepreneurship mindset and persistency, Jimmy Chin – for all his alpinist adventures around the world behind the lens and finally Trevor Noah – for his life accomplishment and unique humor.“
